Zamfara SSG Says Family Members Free to Choose Political Parties, Dismisses APC’s Claims

The Secretary to the Zamfara State Government (SSG), Malam Abubakar Mohammad Nakwada, has reminded the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state that democracy guarantees every adult the freedom to belong to any political party of their choice.

This was contained in a statement issued by the Senior Special Assistant on Media, Office of the Secretary to the State Government, Sulaiman Ahmad Tudu, following the APC’s announcement of the defection of Bello Nakwada, a brother to the SSG.

Tudu stated that the political decisions of the SSG’s family members are guided by personal choice and are not an exception to democratic norms.

According to the statement, if any member of the SSG’s family does not share the vision of Governor Dauda Lawal’s administration, it remains their individual decision, stressing that, such choices do not in any way reflect the position or commitment of the SSG.

“The Secretary to the State Government remains focused on supporting His Excellency, Governor Dauda Lawal, in delivering on his transformative agenda for Zamfara State and will not be distracted by political narratives,” the statement read.

The media aide also noted that, political differences within families are not uncommon in Nigeria’s political history, citing examples of prominent political figures whose relatives belong to opposing parties.

Reacting to the APC’s claim, the statement described the party’s announcement as an attempt to exaggerate the significance of the defection by linking it to the personality of the SSG, rather than focusing on substantive political developments.

The statement further observed that, the APC’s announcement came at a time when several influential members of the party in Zamfara State were defecting to other political platforms and aligning with the administration of Governor Dauda Lawal.

Those mentioned include a former state chairman of the APC, Alhaji Lawali Makaman Kaura, as well as notable youth mobilisers Jamilu Adamu Escape and Ramadan Mijinyawa, among others across the state.

The SSG’s office challenged the APC to address internal political inconsistencies within its ranks, questioning why a close family member of one of the party’s prominent leaders, Senator Abdulaziz Yari, is reportedly a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The statement reiterated that the Zamfara State Government remains committed to governance, stability, and the delivery of dividends of democracy to the people of the state, rather than engaging in political distractions.

Zamfara APC, SSG’s Office Trade Words Over Defection Claims

The Zamfara State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Office of the Secretary to the Zamfara State Government (SSG) have exchanged statements following the reported defection of Bello Nakwada, younger brother of the SSG, Malam Abubakar Muhammad Nakwada, from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC.

In a statement issued by the APC Publicity Secretary in Zamfara State, Yusuf Idris Gusau, the opposition party announced that, Bello Nakwada had officially defected from the PDP, citing alleged high-handedness, unfair treatment, and lack of internal democracy within the ruling party as reasons for his decision.

According to the APC, Nakwada publicly distanced himself from the PDP-led administration in the state, including Governor Dauda Lawal and his elder brother, the SSG.

The party also disclosed that, a former PDP chairmanship aspirant for Gusau Local Government Area, Hassan Idris Gusau, also defected alongside Nakwada.

The APC said both politicians were received in Abuja by the Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Mohammed Matawalle, where they pledged loyalty to the APC leadership and commended the party’s unity and internal cohesion under leaders such as Dr. Matawalle and Senator Abdulaziz Yari Abubakar.

Dr. Matawalle, while welcoming the defectors, assured them of full integration into the party and urged them to mobilise their supporters to participate in the ongoing APC e-registration exercise, describing it as vital ahead of future elections.

Reacting to the development, the Office of the Secretary to the Zamfara State Government dismissed the APC’s claims, described the publicity surrounding the defection as an attempt to manufacture political relevance amid what it termed internal challenges within the opposition party.

In a statement signed by the Senior Special Assistant on Media to the SSG, Sulaiman Ahmad Tudu, the government said the APC deliberately linked the defection to the SSG in order to exaggerate its political significance.

The statement noted that the APC announcement came at a time when several influential party members were reportedly leaving the APC to align with Governor Dauda Lawal, including a former state chairman of the party, Alhaji Lawali Makaman Kaura, as well as youth leaders Jamilu Adamu Escape and Ramadan Mijinyawa, among others across the state.

The SSG’s office stressed that, Nigeria’s democracy allows individuals the freedom to belong to any political party of their choice, adding that, family relationships do not dictate political loyalty.

It further stated that, Malam Abubakar Muhammad Nakwada remains focused on supporting Governor Dauda Lawal’s administration and would not be distracted by political propaganda or personal decisions of relatives.

Drawing comparisons, the statement recalled instances where family members have belonged to opposing political parties, including at the national level, and questioned why the APC had remained silent over similar situations within its own leadership.

Kaduna Electric Flags off Installation of Free Prepared Meters in Zamfara

Kaduna Electric has commenced the installation of free prepaid electricity meters in Samaru Community, Gusau Local Government Area of Zamfara State, as part of efforts to eliminate estimated billing and improve accountability in electricity consumption.

The initiative was officially flagged off during a ceremony held in the community.

Speaking at the event, the Head of the Metering Project at Kaduna Electric, Abba Ali Maiborno, said the project is being implemented under the World Bank–supported Strategic Renewable Energy Programme (SREP) in collaboration with the Federal Government of Nigeria, and is being supervised by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) Project Management Unit (PMU).

Maiborno explained that the primary objective of the project is to ensure that electricity consumers are properly metered, thereby eradicating estimated billing and promoting transparency within the power sector.

“We are trying to eradicate estimated billing and ensure customers are properly metered so that there is accountability for the energy consumed,” he said.

He noted that although Kaduna Electric operates at the distribution level of the electricity value chain, revenue generated from customers is crucial to sustaining the entire sector, including power transmission and generation.

“The money collected from customers is used to fund TCN and generation companies. About 70 per cent of electricity generation in Nigeria depends on gas, and these funds are required to purchase gas for power generation,” he explained.

Maiborno assured customers of the quality and reliability of the meters, saying that all meters supplied under the project have been tested and certified by the Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency (NEMSA).

He further emphasized that both the meters and their installation are completely free of charge, urging customers to disregard any contrary information.

“These meters are free, and the installation is also free. Customers are not expected to pay a dime,” he stressed.

On the scope of the project, Maiborno disclosed that about 5,000 meters have already been delivered to Zamfara State as the first batch, with additional supplies expected in the coming months.

According to him, Kaduna Electric is expected to receive a total of 73,050 meters, out of which 25,000 meters are scheduled to arrive by February, while the remaining batches will be delivered before the completion of the project.

He added that the World Bank–supported metering project is expected to be completed by May 2026 across Nigeria.

Maiborno called on electricity consumers in the state to cooperate fully with Kaduna Electric staff during the installation process to ensure the success of the project.

“We want maximum cooperation from customers. They should accept the meters and support our staff working within their communities,” he appealed.

He also noted that both single-phase and three-phase meters are being deployed to accommodate different categories of electricity users.

Speaking on behalf of the benefiting pilot community, Alhaji Sani Banker commended  the initiative, described it as timely and beneficial.

He assured the company of the community’s full cooperation to ensure the successful implementation of the project.

Zamfara Scholarship Board Records Major Achievements in 2025, Unveils Plans for 2026 — Prof. Rashida Liman

The Executive Secretary of the Zamfara State Scholarship Board, Professor Rashida Liman, has disclosed that the Board recorded significant achievements in 2025, resolving long-standing challenges that affected hundreds of Zamfara students studying both within and outside Nigeria.

Professor Liman made this known while speaking with a Radio Nigeria correspondent in Gusau, the Zamfara State capital.

She attributed the successes to the commitment of the state government under the leadership of Governor Dauda Lawal to reform the scholarship system and safeguard the educational future of Zamfara indigenes.

According to her, the Board inherited numerous challenges from previous administrations, particularly unpaid tuition fees and the abandonment of students studying abroad. However, she said decisive interventions in 2025 helped to resolve most of the inherited issues.

Recovery of Certificates Withheld for Over a Decade

One of the landmark achievements recorded in 2025, according to Professor Liman, was the resolution of the long-standing case involving Zamfara students sponsored to Crescent University, Abeokuta, Ogun State, by previous administrations.

She explained that due to unpaid tuition fees, the university withheld the certificates of over 80 students who graduated nine to ten years ago, preventing them from securing employment or advancing their careers.

To resolve the crisis, the Scholarship Board had engaged the university management in negotiations, resulting in an agreement that allowed the Zamfara State Government to settle the outstanding fees in three instalments.

“In total, the Zamfara State Government paid ₦190 million to recover the certificates. Alhamdulillah, all payments have been completed and the certificates have been collected,” she said.

Professor Liman added that a certificate presentation ceremony was held about three weeks ago, during which Governor Dauda Lawal personally presented the certificates to the affected graduates, describing the intervention as a huge relief to both parents and beneficiaries.

Cyprus Students Crisis Resolved

The Executive Secretary also addressed the long-standing crisis involving Zamfara students studying in Cyprus, who were abandoned due to alleged unpaid tuition fees by a former administration.

She said the foreign university demanded ₦1.3 billion as outstanding fees for about 82 students, without providing a transparent breakdown of the charges.

Professor Liman disclosed that a high-level committee comprising the Commissioners for Education and Finance, the Economic Adviser, and other senior officials travelled to Cyprus to negotiate, but no agreement was reached.

Following the stalemate, she said the State Executive Council approved the return of the students to Nigeria, with a commitment to place them in alternative universities.

“We kept to our promise. The students were re-admitted into other universities so they could continue their studies,” she said.

She noted that although the Board’s policy does not ordinarily cover private universities, the government made an exception due to the hardship faced by the students. As a result, some were admitted into Capital City University, Kano, while others were placed at Nile University.

Professor Liman added that certificates of students who had already completed their programmes would also be settled and retrieved, noting that some had personally paid their tuition fees.

Nearly 300 Students Benefited in 2025
According to Professor Liman, about 300 students benefited from various interventions in 2025, including full and partial scholarships, settlement of tuition debts, fresh admissions, and emergency support.

She said students were placed on full scholarships at institutions such as Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai, and Al-Amin University, Minna, while others gained fresh admissions into specialised institutions, including a College of Nursing.

Biometric Verification and Bursary Rollout

The Executive Secretary announced plans to commence biometric verification of Zamfara students across tertiary institutions as part of efforts to build a reliable and comprehensive student database.

She explained that the exercise would involve capturing students’ photographs and fingerprints to ensure transparency, accountability, and seamless disbursement of bursaries and scholarships.

“Once the data is in place, it becomes easier to update records yearly as students graduate and new ones are admitted,” she noted.

Institutional Visits Strengthen Relationships

Professor Liman also revealed that the Board conducted visits to tertiary institutions across Zamfara, Sokoto, Kebbi, Kano, Kaduna, and other states to strengthen relationships with school authorities and students.

She said the visits were aimed at introducing the leadership of the Scholarship Board to vice-chancellors, provosts, and students, while reaffirming the Board’s commitment to supporting Zamfara students wherever they are studying.

Boosting Education and Human Capital Development

She emphasized that the Board’s interventions align with Governor Dauda Lawal’s six-point rescue agenda, with education identified as a top priority.

According to her, the Scholarship Board exists to support indigent students, ease the financial burden on parents amid economic challenges, and ensure access to quality education.

“Education is key to human capital development. By supporting our students today, we are preparing them to contribute meaningfully to the development of Zamfara State tomorrow,” she said.

She added that financial support remains critical to academic success, as it allows students to focus fully on their studies without the burden of tuition fees and learning materials.

“When students are not worried about how to pay school fees or buy textbooks and notebooks, they can concentrate on learning and perform better academically,” she explained.

Professor Liman further disclosed that in 2025, the Board sponsored eight Zamfara indigenes on full scholarship to the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology (NCAT), Zaria—an unprecedented milestone for the state.

According to her, four of the beneficiaries are undergoing pilot training, while the remaining four are studying aircraft engineering.

“For the first time in the history of Zamfara State, we sponsored eight indigenes to an aviation college. This is a major achievement and a source of pride for the state,” she said.

Looking Ahead to 2026

Looking ahead to 2026, the Executive Secretary said the Board’s priority is to consolidate existing achievements while expanding support to areas yet to be fully covered.

She revealed plans to roll out bursaries for all Zamfara indigenes studying in tertiary institutions across the country, regardless of gender or political affiliation.

“The Scholarship Board is apolitical. As long as you are an indigene of Zamfara State, we are ready to support you,” she stressed.

She also announced plans to resume international scholarship programmes previously suspended due to inherited debts, confirming that all such liabilities—including those owed to Sharda University in India—have now been cleared.

“We have settled the debts, and by the end of this month, the affected students are expected to collect their certificates from India,” she said.

On digitalisation, Professor Liman disclosed that the Board operates an online platform to enhance transparency and accessibility, encouraging students to register on the Board’s website for information on scholarships and opportunities.

She added that the Board’s office along Sokoto Road in Gusau remains open to students and members of the public for inquiries and guidance.

Commenting on challenges, she commended Governor Dauda Lawal for his consistent support, describing it as instrumental to the Board’s achievements.

“His Excellency has given us full support. Of course, like Oliver Twist, it is never enough, but for now we do not have major challenges,” she said.

She appealed to parents and stakeholders to continue supporting the Board through prayers and cooperation to enable it to sustain and improve its activities in the coming year.

Murtala Dantoro Urges FG to Deploy Special Military Task Force to Tackle Insecurity in Bargu, Niger State.

Murtala Haliru Dantoro,  the son of late Emir of Borgu, Senator Haliru Dantoro, Kitoro III in Niger State has appealed to the Federal Government to urgently deploy a special military task force and establish permanent security bases across the area to stem escalating insecurity and protect vulnerable communities.

The call was made by Murtala Haliru Dantoro at a news briefing in Kaduna, where he spoke on behalf of what he described as the “Voiceless People of the Borgu Kingdom."

Murtala Dantoro who is the son of the late Emir of Borgu, Senator Haliru Dantoro, Kitoro III, stressed that, sustained attacks by armed bandits have continued to disrupt livelihoods, displace families, and erode public confidence in security arrangements across the kingdom.

According to him, the proposed military intervention should include the immediate establishment of permanent bases in strategic locations such as New Bussa, Babana, Dugga, Wawa, and other flashpoints to ensure rapid response to security threats and restore normalcy.

Dantoro also stressed the urgent need for border security reinforcement, noting that, the porous borders between Nigeria, Benin Republic, and Niger Republic have worsened the security situation.

He called for the sealing of illegal entry points and the deployment of border patrol units along the Mokwa–New Bussa road and key parts of the Borgu axis.

He further advocated the establishment of border checkpoints with 24-hour security presence and enhanced intelligence-sharing mechanisms with neighboring countries to curb cross-border criminal activities.

On community security empowerment, Murtala Dantoro urged the Federal Government to equip and train local vigilante groups, including the Civilian Joint Task Force, to complement formal security efforts.

He also called for the provision of communication equipment and radios to support early warning systems and the creation of a community policing structure directly coordinated with the military.

Speaking on intelligence gathering and coordination, Dantoro emphasized the importance of synergy among all security agencies operating in the area.

He said community leaders, hunters, and local stakeholders should be engaged as intelligence sources, alongside the creation of anonymous reporting channels for security threats.

He also highlighted the need for improved road and security-supporting infrastructure, including the rehabilitation of access roads to remote villages, clearing of bushes along major routes to eliminate ambush points, installation of street lights in vulnerable communities, and the construction of security outposts at strategic junctions.

Dantoro further  demanded direct presidential oversight of the Borgu security situation, including the appointment of a Special Security Adviser dedicated to the kingdom, weekly security reports to the Presidency, and monthly security review meetings with service chiefs in Borgu.

Murtala Haliru Dantoro also appealed for a presidential visit to the area to assess the situation.

He urged the Federal Government to maintain a sustained military presence for a minimum of five years, allocate a dedicated annual budget for Borgu security operations, and establish a permanent security coordination centre in New Bussa, with quarterly presidential reviews of progress.

According to him, the Borgu region—covering New Bussa, Babana, Wawa, Kainji, and surrounding communities—has endured persistent attacks that have forced farmers away from their farmlands, kept children out of school, and left families living in constant fear.

He also appealed to the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) to intervene, reminding the body of its mandate to promote peaceful coexistence in Northern Nigeria, and urged it to urgently examine the worsening situation in Borgu, which he said was rapidly getting out of control.
