Zamfara First Lady urges journalist to promote Gender Equity and safety Reporting.

The First Lady of Zamfara State, Hajiya Huriyya Dauda Lawal, has called on women journalists to use their platforms to promote gender equity, safety, and inclusive participation in decision-making processes across all sectors.

She made the call at the opening ceremony of a three-day workshop on “Gender Equity and Safety/Gender-Sensitive Reporting” organized by the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) in collaboration with the Norwegian Union of Journalists, held in Gusau, the Zamfara State capital.
Hajiya Huriyya commended NAWOJ and its partners for the initiative, described the workshop as timely and essential in strengthening the capacity of female journalists to contribute meaningfully to advocacy, policy influence, and social justice.

“Journalism remains a powerful tool for advocacy and change, and it is heartwarming to see women journalists taking the lead in advancing gender equity and safety in media spaces,” she said.

She urged participants to take full advantage of the sessions to gain knowledge and skills that would help in promoting women’s welfare and participation in all spheres of life.

The First Lady further encouraged women journalists to uphold the spirit of motherhood in their professional engagements and remain good ambassadors of womanhood.

“Continue to champion the betterment of women in terms of welfare, inclusion, access to quality education, the fight against gender-based violence, and the demand for special seats for women in the National Assembly and other political structures,” she added.

Highlighting the efforts of Governor Dauda Lawal’s administration in promoting women’s empowerment, Hajiya Huriyya noted that women now serve as commissioners and councillors across the 14 local government areas of the state, reflecting the government’s commitment to inclusive governance.

She also disclosed that the Zamfara State Government, through her office, would continue to collaborate with NAWOJ and other development partners to promote women-focused initiatives in education, healthcare, empowerment, and social welfare.

In a remark, the National President of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Comrade Aisha Ibrahim K. Bura, said the training, which marks the final phase of a nationwide program, is aimed at equipping women journalists with practical skills for safe and professional reporting while promoting gender-balanced media coverage.
“It is a great honor and privilege to be in Zamfara today as we conclude this important national training series. This workshop represents a significant milestone in our collective effort to enhance professionalism, ensure safety, and strengthen inclusivity in journalism,” Comrade Aisha said.

Comrade Aisha commended the Zamfara State First Lady, Hajiya Huriyya Dauda Lawal, for her unwavering commitment to women’s development and empowerment through humanitarian, educational, and peace-building initiatives.

“Your Excellency, your presence today speaks volumes about your compassion and dedication to women in Zamfara. You have become a voice of strength for women, and NAWOJ deeply appreciates your leadership,” she added.

In his goodwill message, the Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Zamfara State Council, Comrade Ibrahim Musa Maizare, commended the state government for its support to the journalism profession and pledged continued cooperation between the NUJ and NAWOJ in promoting ethical and responsible media practice.

“We sincerely appreciate Your Excellency’s concern and commitment to the journalism profession. Zamfara journalists are proud of your administration’s efforts, and we will continue to work together for the progress of our state,” he said.

Also speaking, the Chairperson of NAWOJ Zamfara State Chapter, Comrade Jamila Musa Kanoma, described the training as timely and impactful, emphasizing that,  it would empower women journalists with the knowledge and confidence to work effectively.
Comrade Jamila urged participants to take full advantage of the workshop, share experiences, and strengthen their commitment to building a more inclusive media environment.
