Bill to Establish Federal University Teaching Hospital Gusau Scales Second Reading

A bill seeking to establish the Federal University Teaching Hospital, Gusau, sponsored by the Member representing Bungudu/Maru Federal Constituency,  Dr. Abdulmalik Zubairu Zannan Bungudu, has passed its second reading in the House of Representatives.

This was disclosed in a statement issued to journalists in Gusau by the Chief Spokesperson to the lawmaker, Aminu Lawal Bungudu.

While leading the debate on the floor of the House, Dr Zannan Bungudu explained that, the bill, if enacted, would encourage investment in the healthcare sector by providing medical students with top-tier training opportunities, while simultaneously improving access to quality healthcare for citizens.

“It would be recalled that Hon. Zannan Bungudu had, on Thursday, February 20, 2025, presented the bill for its first reading before the hallowed chamber,” the statement noted.

He informed the House that the Federal University Gusau has already commenced its Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) programme, which cannot thrive without a dedicated teaching hospital.

According to him, the step would go a long way in addressing the critical shortage of medical professionals in the country, particularly in underserved regions like Zamfara,” he added.

In his response, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Tajuddeen Abbas, directed the Clerk of the House to advance the bill to the second reading.

The bill has now been referred to the House Committee on University Education for further legislative action.
