The All Progressives Congress APC in Zamfara State has strongly criticized Governor Dauda Lawal over what it described as misleading statements regarding to his administration’s efforts in tackling armed banditry and providing support to banditry victims.
This follows a viral video where the governor was seen speaking to journalists about his government's handling of security and the welfare of those affected by the ongoing insecurity.
In a statement issued by the APC Publicity Secretary, Yusuf Idris Gusau, described the governor's remarks as insincere and deceptive.
Malam Idris Yusuf Gusau alleged that, the administration had failed to fulfill key campaign promises, particularly the pledge to end banditry within the first two months of assuming office.
“Governor Lawal appears to be preparing to mark his second year in office without any meaningful progress on his major campaign promise. Instead of improvement, insecurity has worsened in Zamfara,” the statement read.
According Yusuf Idris, Governor Lawal recent comments at the Gusau General Hospital showed a lack of seriousness and compassion.
"The party also accused the governor of neglecting victims of attacks. “Rather than visiting communities ravaged by bandits or sending credible delegations to sympathize and offer support, Governor Lawal chooses to travel from one state or country to another, enjoying the company of friends and family while his people suffer.”
He pointed out that, a major point of contention was the governor’s claim that victims of gunshot wounds receive free treatment at Yariman Bakura Specialist Hospital and the Federal Medical Centre in Gusau.
“That is simply false,” Idris stated. “Just weeks ago, I personally witnessed victims being turned away from Yariman Bakura Hospital due to lack of funds. Tragically, some of them died as a result, with no assistance from the government.”
The APC called on the governor to publicly release the names, communities, and treatment details of beneficiaries who supposedly received free care, including the amount spent and the relevant receipts or payment records.
The APC Spokesman further asked the Governor and the management of the two hospitals to publish comprehensive records of the alleged free treatments provided under his administration.”
The party further urged journalists who conducted the interview to verify the governor’s claims and probe deeper into the situation of victims in remote areas of the state, such as Tsafe Local Government Area, who may not have access to facilities in Gusau.
“The truth is, the Zamfara State Government under Dauda Lawal has neither identified nor supported any gunshot victim. His claims are fabrications designed for political propaganda,” Idris declared.
The statement concluded with a call for Governor Lawal to apologize to the people of Zamfara and the entire country for “misleading the public,” and to take sincere, coordinated action with relevant stakeholders to end insecurity and care for victims.
He emphasized that, the citizens of Zamfara state are discerning enough to recognize lies wrapped in propaganda, stressing that, Governor Lawal must start telling the truth or remain silent to avoid further embarrassment,” the statement added.
